Everything really took off this year at the Veterans Art Center and no signs of slowing down. We don't need it to slow down but I keep telling myself I will find time to post updates when 'things slow down' and that's not gonna happen. :)

In our last fiscal year we had 242 registered veterans and family members. This year we are currently at 375 and still have 2 months to go for a total. The few classes we offer have been very well attended and open studio continues to be busy as well. It is great to see so much use of the studio spaces.

On the regular schedule we have leather projects, leather tooling, tai chi, bodytalk, lets make art, and our newest - Tarot Card readings. Additionally we have a weekly class for VA Rec therapy and biweekly classes for the VA Mesa Recovery Center.

And we have really good news on the roof. As many of you know, Justin Shaw, of Honest Roofing, has stripped, repaired and shingled the awning. He has done this at his own expense and we are blessed. Its not quite finished because it has to tie in with the top roof when that gets rebuilt. Reedeemed Roffing has given us a fantastic discount on the main roof rebuild and we have been desperately trying to raise the funds. For Kurtis to order the materials and get started with the tear off we need to come up with 50% of thcontract. Today, thanks to a grant from WCCF, we met that milestone goal and we will see activity happening soon. Now we are frantic to raise the remaining funds to pay off the contract at completion. Volunteers who are available to help with the tear off are welcome.

All of us down here at the Veterans Art Center are extremely greatful for the community members who have stepped up to help us with the roof project, and friends and members who have helped with fundraising. What once seemed like an impossible goal is finally not just in site, but moving into the second stages. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you.

I am looking for someone, or a group of someones, who would like to host a yard sale for us. We do not have any available property on our lot to have one here but have plenty of yard sale items, including arts and craft supplies.

I am also looking for a spot we can park a 65 passenger school bus we have been using for storage. Or, if someone is interested in purchasing the bus we can probably consider that as well.

We are finishing off our 4th quarter of the fiscal year and plan to have an annual members meeting in July or August. We have had a great year and its time to update you. Yesterday was the 12th anniversary of opening the doors on the Veterans Art Center so maybe we can celebrate that milestone too.

I will try to update you a little more often.

Operation Revamp and the Veterans Art Center have experienced an outstanding year this year with over 300 annual registrations and we’re just wrapping up our 3rd quarter. To date we have provided $42,864.02 in veteran housing assistance, alternative healing, food/gas cards, veterans emergency assistance, veteran art supplies, and utilities for the Veterans Art Center. In addition we have spent $6086.16 on transportation and veteran bus passes.

Our ongoing weekly classes have been well attended and we are planning a few more to add to the calendar in the near future.

We are currently getting a roof repair taken care of on our awning/mansard and once we acquire the needed funds through grants or donations, we will be getting a whole new roof. Inside the building has been an ongoing process of sorting and organization. Your survey responses help us with these grants.

I will be trying to get as many survey responses as I can before the end of March so if you respond and still get more reminders, remember the survey is anonymous so I do not know who has replied. Our goal is 80% and I am determined to get there, and really need your help. Whether you love us or hate us, your feedback is important.

Urgent Support Needed to Sustain Assistance to Local Veterans

We're thrilled to share some positive news amid our current challenges. We are honored to have been awarded a $50,000 grant from the Colorado Department of Veterans Affairs for the current fiscal year, dedicated to supporting our local veterans. The grant, effective from July 1, 2023, to June 14, 2024, encompasses various critical needs, including food and gas cards, vehicle repair, utility bill assistance, specialty art supplies, and emergency needs unmet by other agencies.

However, we find ourselves in a difficult position. While we've only utilized 8% of the total grant to date, the grant operates on a reimbursable basis. This means we must make the payment or purchase first and then request reimbursement. Unfortunately, delays in reimbursements since October have left us with no available funds or credit to fulfill current requests from qualified veterans.

In previous years, our general and base funds have supplemented the grant account, ensuring continuity in our support services. This year, a substantial decrease in donations and income has left us struggling to cover both our studio's operating expenses and grant-related needs. The ongoing shortage is creating hardship for local veterans who rely on our assistance.

Traditionally, the DMVA allowed for an advance of grant funds for organizations facing financial difficulties. Unfortunately, this option has been eliminated for the current fiscal year. To continue providing essential services and fulfill urgent requests from veterans, we urgently need funds in both our general operating account and grant account.

For the month of December, we've deferred our mortgage payment, but other essential expenses, such as insurance, utilities, and loan payments, still total around $2500. Your generous donations can help us cover these costs, providing breathing room for the grant while we await reimbursements.

We are still trying to recover from our pandemic setbacks and really need your help. As an all volunteer organization we did not qualify or were not eligible for many of the Covid recovery grants because we have no payroll, a common eligibility requirement, even for the City of Grand Junction non-profit grants.

Our community fundraisers ceased and have not picked up any speed as yet and volunteers are only now slowly coming forward to help out. We NEED your support to survive.

The donation meter on this page has a one month goal of expenses that will be changed monthly and the amount collected will include all online or offline donations, any sales or fundraiser income, and any other income aside from grants for other programs and services not included in these monthly expense.

Also not included are additional maintenance and repair expenses including an ongoing upgrade to LED and replacement of dead lighting, our healing arts programs that are not currently funded, and instructor requests for supplies we don't currently have.

Required Monthly Expenses. (September 2022) This amount includes our building, utilities, storage, phone & internet and programs not funded through other grants and does not include those programs or services covered by grants and other funds.

August 2022 updates

Wondering what's happening these days at the Veteran's Art Center? Quite a bit actually but I'll try and keep this brief. You are welcome to drop by and check us out anytime you want between 9 and 5 Monday thru Friday or 10 and 4 on Saturday.

Do Facebook Fundraisers Help?

Since January 1st of 2018 we have raised $7995.77 on Facebook. Keep in mind that these fund raisers get smaller donations but they still add up. The troubling part is the waning activity. The fundraisers this year have been few and far between.

I have created a Facebook Challenge fundraiser and would like you to head on over. It works a little different and we all jump in on the same one and compete against each other. I am not asking you to donate (although I won't turn that down) but to get in on the fun, join the fundraiser challenge and create a fundraiser page.

Classes and Workshops

We have been getting a little busier at the Veterans Art Center with new classes being added to the schedule. If you aren't getting the emails, be sure and check the event calendar.

Volunteering

We have a lot of volunteer opportunities available from fundraising, instructors and event planning, to sorting and organizing and renovating. We also have an online volunteer signup where you can let us know what your interests are and when you are available.

For those of you who have signed up and are volunteering, remember to log your hours on the volunteer time sheet.

Membership

I would like to remind you to check your profile and see if you still have a membership. There was a rapidly growing list of 'lapsed' members who still had access to the members only features but were seriously behind on paying dues. These members have been archived or moved to basic contacts. If you were among the banished you are welcome to join us. If you are unable to pay your membership, please check and see if we have any scholarships available.

Books and More Books

If you have not been following all of Dave's posts on our Facebook group, you are missing out. He had a large donation of books come in on every topic imaginable and plenty of novels too. They are free, come in, pick what you want, as many as you want, and take them away.

Studio Access and Art Supplies

We are into our third year of online registration and I am happy to report that most of you get it. For those still in the dark, we have an annual online registration application that must be completed before you can access the studios, music room, classes, equipment, art supplies, transportation, computers, or any of the healing art sessions. You only need to fill it out once during the fiscal year July-June and I am happy to report there are already 58 registered participants since July 1st. All of the above programs and services are available at no cost so humor me, and let me know who is accessing it.

We are purging and you can benefit

We have way too much stuff! We had way too much stuff a few years ago and it has doubled in the past couple years. In an effort to narrow it down, aside from sorting and throwing out a lot of trash over the past few months, we will be selling and/or giving away a whole lot of art supplies and equipment that is either surplus, seldom used, or not used at the Veterans Art Center.

This effort actually started last summer and tables of give-a-way items have been picked through in the gallery periodically. We have also listed items on eBay and in the online store on our website. Most of the items listed in the online store will show up as $0.00 if you are logged in. That is correct, members get them free!

Things are not disappearing fast enough though, and we really need to purge. We will increase trash tossing, eBay sales, Facebook sales, and items in our online store and probably a yard sale or two. We will also have many items available for free, but donations are always welcome. For this I need a few volunteers. Let me know what you can help with.

Classes and Workshops

Our healing arts sessions in both BodyTalk and Tai Chi are held regularily and if you are interested please check the event calendar for more information and/or to register.

Leather class is held weekly and extremely well attended.

Upcoming classes not yet scheduled but starting in the new year are seed beading with Semantha and acrylic poured painting. Check the calendar for updates. Email announcements will be sent to members. Another round of soap making and liquid laundry detergent making will also be offered in the new year. Other tentative workshops are alcohol ink, resin casting and epoxy art, encaustics, frit painting, and vinyl graphics.

We would love to have other classes to offer and are anxious for other instructors to come forward and schedule classes or workshops. If you would like to offer an ongoing class or a one class workshop, please contact us and we'll work with you to get it scheduled and make sure we have all needed supplies. Contact Wendy, email works best.

Please remember that the studio is open for whatever you want to work on whenever there is no class scheduled. The woodshop and glass studio are available at all times.

Holiday Spirit needed for Veteran's Family

I have a veteran mom very much in need of some help with cold weather clothing for her 4 children and I am reaching out to ask for some help.

Girl (baby) - size 12 month

Also needed are diapers for the 2 youngest. Sizes 3 and 4.

While the iPhone app has been in existence since we initially launched our new website through Wild Apricot, the Android version was not fully functional. At some point this was completed and both versions are now fully functional.

If you download and install on your iPhone or Android, and you are a paid member, here's what you will be able to do with the app.

You will also be asked if you would like to receive notifications and these will be event reminders, renewal reminders and other site specific items.

As noted above you will have access to a members list and can click on individual members to view their profile. If you do not want your profile information visible, you can edit your profile and choose any information you want kept private or make your entire profile private.

This is what will appear on a member profile that has no settings marked private.

You will also get a handy event list of upcoming classes and events

and can click on any for more information or to register and/or add it to your calendar.

Only current paid members will have access through the app and will need to login with their email address and password.

Uncanny Valley Gallery Silent Auction

Beneath The Camo is an annual benefit art show for our friends over at the Veterans Art Center.
We will be hosting a silent auction all month, with art donated by members of the Veterans Art Center & Uncanny Valley.
All proceeds will go to help the Veterans Art Center with their mission of helping soldiers and their families heal through art. Auction runs until July 31 so be sure and drop by Uncanny Valley Art Gallery, 455 Main St and check out all the art.

Yes We Are Open - Sorta

If the door is open, c'mon in. Check the event calendar for scheduled classes and events. Stop by on Saturday, July 17th between 9 and 11 am for a mini wellness expo and find out what programs and classes are currently offered. The computers are available, woodshop is available and all that is required to access them, or any classes or healing arts sessions, is to complete the online registration form , and we won't bug you again to do it until next July.

The main studio is not yet open pending volunteers for sorting the plethora of donations that arrived while we have been closed. Classes, for now, will be held in the gallery. Volunteers are also needed to have a yard sale to eradicate the multitude of non-art related items we unearthed while cleaning last year, along with an excess of some art related items.

Open studio will be restricted to hours we have a volunteer or volunteers on site to monitor and assist.

Slowly but Surely

We are beginning the first sessions and classes at the Veterans Art Center. Thanks to some very generous (non member) volunteers we have the gallery semi-cleaned and will be starting the body talk sessions on Tuesday May 25th. The studio will be open at that time for the bodytalk sessions, veteran fund requests and computer/print/copy/fax use. Anyone wanting to participate will need to be preregistered. The registration for BodyTalk can be found on the event calendar. If not previously completed, we do need the veterans assistance application filled out online.

Everything else will remain closed until further notice. Members anxious to have things open need to help out a little and relieve the burden on the 2 or 3 that have pitched in over the past year. Currently, only the gallery and front area will be open.

Volunteers are also needed for fundraising - however you want to do it. There have been a few Facebook fundraisers throughout the winter and spring but all but one have been non-members from out of State. It's disappointing that our members are not participating and trying to keep us afloat. Exceptions of course to those members who have helped out with generous donations. We are very grateful for those. We only have 2 1/2 months left in this fiscal year. Despite trimming down many of our operational expenses on the budget, our current income is only at 61% of what is required and members need to decide whether they want to reopen or close permanently.

I also use the term members loosely but offer big hugs and the utmost gratitude to those who paid when they expired. Sadly this has been a small number and a loss of membership dues.

Our veterans emergency fund, transportation, art supplies and other programs have continued and we have processed 188 applications. BodyTalk and Tai Chi have also been operating for several months.

I am anxious to reopen if anyone else is interested.

Planning Ahead

We really want to get some of our classes up and running. I am providing a link below for an online survey on class interest. With this feedback I will be able to work on providing classes that you want. Rather than randomly throwing classes on the schedule that no one attends we want to focus on scheduling classes that our veterans and families are interested in so please complete the online survey.

Additionally, the survey will help us contact the participants interested in the classes we schedule. Class sizes will be limited and preregistration will be mandatory so we can allow the instructors planning opportunities.

Depending on class and instructor requirements the classes will be held at the Veterans Art Center or elsewhere. All materials and equipment will be provided. Classes are no charge for veterans, and, in most cases, at no charge for immediate family members. Registration for scheduled classes will be available online directly through the event calendar or through the link in your email notification.

Tai Chi and BodyTalk are already running and information for each of these is available on the event calendar. As new classes are scheduled they will also be listed on the event calendar.

Classes will range from single event 1 or 2 hour classes to ongoing classes on a weekly or biweekly schedule for up to 8 weeks. No art classes will extend beyond 8 sessions. In this way there will be opportunity for new students to start at the beginning without trying to jump in half way through. Registration for the extended session art classes will be required prior to startup and no late entry will be allowed.

For the single event 1 or 2 hour classes the class description will include the goal or project of that particular class and they will all be 'once and done' but you are able to register for as many as you want.

Transportation and Communication Grant!!

Sept 24, 2020– Operation Revamp, Inc has been awarded a grant of $5501 by the Trutta Foundation and Western Colorado Community Foundation (WCCF) for our transportation and communications programs.

The purpose of the grant is to provide operating costs, registration, insurance and maintenance of the suburban for our transportation program and for the annual costs of our online website and member database at Operationrevamp.org

Our transportation program provides rides to and from the VA, special appointments, food bank and delivery services, other transportation needs, as well as helping veterans with local moves.

The grant from the Trutta Foundation and Western Colorado Community Foundation will provide our annual cost to keep our website and member database operational. The website provides information on our programs and services, event calendar and registration, member database, online store, public forums, resource information and more and during this time is our main method of communication while the center remains closed.

The Western Colorado Community Foundation serves seven counties in western Colorado, managing charitable funds for community good. Currently, the Community Foundation manages over 265 charitable funds totaling over $80 million in assets and awards over $3.4 million in grants and scholarships annually.

Reopening Plans

There is no date yet but there will be new policies and procedures in place when we do unlock the doors.

Art Classes and Open Studio

Any and all classes will be held on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays only. On these days there will be no open studio* so access will only be available to those registered for a class.

Open studio will be available on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday only.

*There will be exceptions to the above as follows.

The woodshop will be available daily unless a woodworking class is scheduled.
Glass and ceramics studios will be open daily unless classes are scheduled.
Computer area will be available daily (One computer station only unless a couple or family come in together)

Coffee, lunch, laptop use, reading or lounging will be in the gallery for anyone using open studio, the woodshop, glass studio, ceramics studio or computer station and social distancing will be required.

Walk-ins for services, assistance, sales, copies or fax will be restricted to the store front and gallery area and social distancing will be required.

Anyone entering the building will be required to wear a mask (per government mandate), practice social distancing, and will be subject to temperature check and health questions.

When will we reopen?

This is probably the number one question we get asked and I ask that you please check the forums on the website at operationrevamp.org for news and updates. Any and all information regarding our schedule will be posted there.

Services currently available

We continue to offer art supplies at no charge to veterans, and in many cases families of veterans and the first step is to complete the online application, on the website. Ask and you may well receive.

We also help with urgent needs including bus passes, vehicle repair, food and gas cards, transportation, housing and utilities for eligible veterans. And you guessed it, you start by filling out the online application form. Please note that nothing completely magical happens after you submit the form if you do not reply to any of my emails or texts.

The Suburban is running and we do offer transportation. Again, fill out the online form and you will usually get called back asap. Once you have filled it out you can also call or text the driver at 970-462-1247 to make arrangements.

We are not yet having any art classes but we are offering some of our Healing Arts. Tai Chi is every Wednesday at 1 pm and BodyTalk every 2nd Tuesday. Both of these can be found on our event calendar. You will initially need to fill out the online application and then for each session you want to attend you have to register on the event page or through the email notification you receive. These sessions are at no charge to eligible veterans.

Sales and giveaways

We might be closed to the public but please remember that we do have a lot of things for sale, some listed in the online store, and we do provide curbside pickup, and in some cases, delivery. We also have a ton of art and craft supplies, crafting magazines, patterns and more that are free or almost free and we need to get them cleared out so we can get ready to open. We have a large inventory of essential oils and several boxes of herbal supplements and more. We also have some shop equipment and a couple of photo enlargers for sale, and I will hopefully get that listed soon but you don't have to wait.

What I just said and more

I will sum this all up with a few very important points.

We are not yet open to the public and I am working from home.
We continue to provide many services and healing art sessions
An Online Application is required for almost everything (but you only need to do it once)
We are organizing and have lots of stuff that needs to go.
The forums on the website are there to provide you with current news and information on everything we do and what we plan on doing next.
I am easiest to reach by email at wendy@operationrevamp.org or by text at 970-424-2312. You can also try phoning but if you are not in my contact list you will likely go to voice mail. Please leave a message.
We currently have 158 lapsed members. You can fix this by logging in, resetting your membership (or click renew but make sure it doesn't still say lapsed) and click the link for an invoice. You can then pay online, or drop by the studio and drop it off, or mail it. There is no need to print out the invoice.
Financially we are struggling. Our membership, donation and sales income that we need to continue to function has all but come to a screeching halt. We still have monthly expenses, even while we are not open, and it is hard to manage them with no income. Our total public support income for July and August was $248. With those figures the question should not be 'when' we will open but 'if' we will ever be able to open.

A reminder that our Facebook group is for anyone to post. Feel free to share, post, ask questions or anything else that is non-political. I do post a lot of community announcements there if you are just a follower, but this is a group and we're all in it so I do invite you to use it, even if you just want sympathy for your stubbed toe. Announcing Veteran Artist Of The Month at WROS

Mesa County –The Western Region One Source (WROS) is excited to announce the newest Veteran Artist of the Month, Donna Fullerton. She is a Grand Junction resident who finds inspiration for her art from around the world, although she says, she is most inspired by the American West and South Africa.

Donna’s photography has been published or featured in magazines and online, including official websites for organizations like the National Park Foundation, the National Park Service, The International Audubon Society, Department of the Interior and National Geographic. In 2016, her photo of the Coke Ovens view, taken from inside the Colorado National Monument, was awarded the cover of the National Park Service Centennial Edition photo book. In 2016, Donna was invited by National Geographic to photograph Yellowstone. Two of her photos from that shoot are on display in the WROS.

“As a child I began sketching animals I saw on the big screen,” Fullerton said.

Donna served in the United States Marine Corps, playing the flute in the Marine Corps band. In 1986, she was stationed at El Toro Marine Base in Irvine, Calif., with Comm. Squadron 38.

“I want my artwork to convey a sense of tranquility, beauty and mystery,” Fullerton said. “My work ranges from photography to lost-wax bronze work, and performing arts.”

A reception hosted by Fullerton and WROS staff will be held on Oct. 9, from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., with some of her art work available for sale. A mix of Donna’s work is on display during business hours at the WROS until Oct. 9.

Cleaning and Reorganizing

If you are still out there waiting for news and updates this is your lucky day. First, I want to thank everyone who is patiently waiting for us to open for classes and studio activities again. The good news is we continue to clean and reorganize while we are closed and it will be a lot more inviting when we all come back.

To date we have cleaned and organized much of the storefront, installed and filled shelves in the new storage area (formerly the dark room), organized the glass studio, moved all models and model making supplies into their own room, and unpacked and sorted all of the porcelain, tole painting and wood projects, glass, bisque ware and green ware and displayed everything on shelves. There is still much to be done but when we do reopen it will be a lot easier to find projects and supplied to work on as well as finding a space to work on them.

It is the end of the year for us (doesn't end 2020 unfortunately) and it is also the end of our first decade. Yes, 10 years! Operation Revamp was founded early in 2010 and officially registered and incorporated as a 501(c)3 non profit on July 11, 2010. Happy 10th birthday.

The veterans art center is still closed although still very busy. We are cleaning and reorganizing and hope to open soon. We are also continuing to provide eligible transportation, with restrictions, art supplies if we have what you need (includes some tools and equipment) and our alternative healing sessions are starting or already started. Tai Chi is back and BodyTalk is available through phone or video sessions. Our grant providing emergency funding, bus passes, food and gas cards, ended this month but we have been awarded a 2020-21 package and will have more info on that once we know the covered line items.

Applications are being accepted online for art supplies (and any of our other services) and art supply applications are for Veterans, family members and caregivers. Transportation and anything funded by our grant are limited to eligible veterans only. The online form is also required if you will be attending any of our classes (veteran or family) once we open, or to attend any of the healing arts sessions (veteran only).

Volunteers Needed

During our continued closure we are working on much needed deep cleaning, sorting and reorganizing. We are also posting a lot of the items that are available for pickup or delivery, at no charge, along with items we have for sale in our online store and on social media.

If you would be interested in helping out with any part, from sorting or assembling craft kits to sorting out storage lockers and hauling metal to the scrapyard please contact me by return email or text me at 970-424-2312 or leave a voice message. I would say phone me but I am very seldom close to my phone and have never gotten into the habit of carrying it around with me.

I am also looking for volunteers to make masks and we have plenty of fabric for you to do it with. Currently our volunteers are asked to wear masks and masks are mandatory when riding in the suburban so we need several. Excess will be available for those needing them for the many other places in town with mask requirements. If you would be willing to make some please contact me.

Funding

We are in dire straits for our regular monthly expenses. With the Veterans Art Center being closed we have had little to no income since mid March but regular monthly expenses did not take a break. Our sales have been non-existent (even the coke machine) and no donations in the jug. Online donations are very low too.

I would like to request those of you who can, to help us out with online fundraising. One of the best in our experience is the FaceBook fundraisers and you can create one at https://www.facebook.com/fund/VeteransArtCenter/

By creating the fundraiser and sharing it with your friends the donation income is usually greater than if you just share one someone else created. If you take the time to create it your friends are more apt to consider donating because they trust you.

Additionally, we are offering our soap and other items in the online store. As with everything in the store, if you are a member make sure you are logged in to get the member savings. You can help with this too by sharing the link to the store. The store is directed to local shoppers and members but there is an option for shipping for out of town shoppers. If you are local you can select curbside pickup or delivery. We'll let you know when your order is ready to go out the door.

The DoTerra kit Spring Raffle that was to be drawn on April 8th is in limbo at the moment but as soon as all changes are approved by the State we will again have raffle tickets available and will let you know.

If you have any other ideas for funding resources during this time please let me know. In fact let me know anything you want :) Or ideas about how we should adjust our programs to continue to meet our mission while at a distance. The Veterans Art Center will not open for any in house services or classes until it has gone through deep cleaning, sorting and organizing.

Local church acting as food distribution center

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO/KJCT)-- With so many families without work and needing food, a local church is acting as a food distribution center for other churches and people in need.

Volunteers at Canyon View Vineyard Church unloaded a Convoy of Hope semi-truck filled with 27,000 pounds of food and supplies.

A senior pastor at the church is on the board for Convoy of Hope, and arranged for a truck to be sent down from Missouri.

Church leaders say they want to be a distribution center for other churches that need food for their congregations.

“We have people coming to get food from us that are in Cadillacs, and normal cars..this is not just something that is hitting our lower income people,” said Worship Pastor, Tim Brown.

The church also delivers food to people who are home-bound.

Stay-at-home order issued

Gov. Jared Polis issued a statewide stay-at-home order Wednesday afternoon. It goes into effect 6 a.m. Thursday and will last until April 11.

Many Coloradans, including the vast majority of people in metro Denver, live in counties where stay-at-home orders have already been announced.

Polis said he is issuing the order to save Coloradans’ lives.

Such orders require people to stay at home, except for the following reasons:

Getting groceries, food (including takeout) or essential household items
Getting medication or medical supplies
Getting medical care
Exercise (as long as social distancing is practiced)

In-person gatherings with people outside one’s residence are prohibited.

People can go to work if they provide essential products or services. Examples include health care workers, grocery store staff and some government employees (like first responders).

Eviction Proceedings halted

Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser released a statement calling on state courts to halt eviction proceedings due to the COVID-19 crisis.

As of Sunday, Denver, Mesa, Weld, and Boulder counties have taken this step according to Weiser.

“In this emergency, evicting any Coloradan from their home would exacerbate the public health and economic crisis we are fighting together," says Weiser. "I applaud Governor Polis in leading state agencies and local governments in an effort to stop evictions during this crisis."

Updates on a lot of things

A few notes on updates and status of the Veterans Art Center.

We are still currently closed to walk-ins and all classes are cancelled.

There may or may not be a volunteer or volunteers in the building at any given time but we still remain closed. Please do not count on going down there and expecting someone to open up for you because the cat could well be the lone occupant.

Since part of our mission is to eradicate a lot of isolation it is extremely difficult to instruct you to isolate but at this time we need this to happen. We are still available by phone, text or email and encourage you to access the website frequently for updates on our blog on the home page. Join us on Facebook, on the page or in the group. Reach out however you feel comfortable. This social isolation is about face to face contact and we are still here for you.

Donations Currently we are not accepting donations of art supplies. If you have supplies for Veterans (like toilet paper) please call ahead to make sure there will be someone there or call and request a pickup. We do have several requests for assistance with some hard to come by items.

Alternative Healing Yoga V, Community Acupuncture, Tai Chi, and Reiki are currently cancelled. BodyTalk is also cancelled at the Veterans Art Center however John will continue with sessions at his office on the same date and time. Contact me by email for the details if you would like to participate.

Art Classes are cancelled until further notice. We want to keep you busy and creative, though, so if you need any supplies to work on projects at home please contact me and we'll help as much as possible. For the veterans who have been in soap class we can set you up to carry on at home and I can still answer all your questions remotely.

Emergency Assistance remains unchanged and will continue to follow the same criteria and policies as in the past. We anticipate a greater need and ask that you continue to seek other resources first but contact us as necessary.

Food and Gas Cards These continue to be available with the same requirements and criteria as before. There could be a minor delay but we will do what we can.

Bus Passes Call us if you are in need of a pass and we will make a determination at that time. GVT is keeping us updated on operations but they could shut down or restrict services at any time.

Transportation We are not currently offering rides however we are available for errands, pickups and deliveries. Call or email.

Fundraising and Cash Donations We have as great a need if not greater at this time so for those who have so generously supported us in the past, or those who haven't had time but would like to we are extremely grateful for any donations through any of our online options or mail a check. We are limited to online fundraising, have no current sales abilities, but continue to have all our regular monthly expenses along with increased need of our veterans.

RAFFLE Our second raffle of a DoTerra essential Oils kit was launched earlier in March, before we closed our doors. We have no intention of sending board members out to sell tickets and the draw date is April 8th so we are trying to find a method of selling them locally online. If you want a ticket let me know and we'll figure out how to do this without human contact.

We know that many of our veterans do not have email or internet and ask that you please pass on this information. Remember the information included here will be available on our news blog.

Iam on day 3 of my 14 day quarantine but self isolation may or may not continue after that.

If you have visited areas that are known to have sustained community spread (certain foreign countries, other states with common spread, or Summit, Eagle, Pitkin, and Gunnison counties in Colorado), and were in public locations such as retail shops, restaurants, bars, or ski lodges, we recommend that you watch for symptoms. Self-quarantine is recommended; however, the CDC states that transmission of the disease in the absence of symptoms is less likely.

If you believe you’ve been infected with COVID-19, symptoms will occur within 14 days of exposure (but most likely within 6 days). At the first indication of symptoms, you must isolate yourself. Symptoms for COVID-19 include cough, fever, and shortness of breath. Isolation means you must stay home and away from others until seven (7) days have passed since symptoms first appeared, AND 72 hours after the fever has gone away, with improvement in respiratory symptoms.

For anyone who has not visited an area with sustained community spread, you can still be at risk. Mesa County expects to have sustained community spread soon. In order to keep your risk for contracting the disease low, please be diligent about following these guidelines:

Stay at home and away from others, as much as possible.
Avoid non-essential travel.
Stay in touch with others by phone, email, or video.
Maintain 6 feet of separation when you are around others.
Frequently clean and disinfect high-touch surfaces like keyboards, phones, doorknobs, and light switches. The latest information suggests this virus can live on hard surfaces for up to three days.
Avoid touching your face.
Cover your nose and mouth when coughing and sneezing.
Wash your hands often with soap and water. If soap and water are not available, a hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol is acceptable.

In order to reduce the risk of exposure and to keep our volunteers, Veterans and members safe we will be closing the Veterans Art Center to walk-ins and cancelling all scheduled classes until further notice.

Because of the numerous closures in the past 24 hours we faced an influx of people coming to one of the few centers still open. While this would normally be a good thing, it would increase the risk and we do not want to do that.

Some of our volunteers will still be at the center however the doors will be locked. We are still available by phone or email.

Additionally, following today's guidance from the CDPHE that states: 'Anyone who has been in Eagle, Summit, Pitkin, or Gunnison counties in the past week should minimize all contact with other people, whether or not they are experiencing symptoms.', our CHO and I will be hanging out at home for a couple weeks.

This is a community announcement regarding the Veterans Art Center during the Covid-19 pandemic. Like us, you have most likely been following news of the Covid-19 (novel coronavirus) outbreak. At this time we have decided to keep the Veterans Art Center open.

First, and most important, please know the health and well-being of our veterans, your families and our volunteers is our top priority. We want you to feel confident attending the Veterans Art Center and we remain diligent in our commitment to providing a safe environment for all who visit or attend classes. As a result, we’ve taken enhanced measures regarding cleaning and participation.

These include:

Enhanced availability of soap and hand sanitizer
Enhanced cleaning practices on frequent use surfaces (tables, phones, keyboards, door handles, etc)
Enhanced air filtration and essential oil diffusion
Precautionary monitoring/screening of participants and attendees.
- If you are sick with flu like symptoms we ask that you do not enter the building.
- Persons coughing or sneezing more than usual will be asked to wear a provided mask.
- If you know you have been in close contact with someone who has tested positive within the past 14 days we ask that you do not enter.

While we recognize many of our younger and healthy veterans and family members are at low risk we also know they can be carriers despite a lack of symptoms and our priority is to do our utmost to protect those at higher risk. We also recognize visible symptoms can be no more than a cold or allergies and we ask your patience and understanding if we err on the side of caution. We appreciate your assistance in helping us.

Save the Building - Save a Life

YES, you read that right! And we are not just about Art!

In January 2010 I had a vision of a functional art center for veterans and families to heal from emotional and mental injuries. The non-profit Organization, Operation Revamp, Inc, was founded in May 2010, Incorporated in July 2010 and awarded 501(C)3 status in January 2011 as a public charity. YOU are that public, and owners of the non-profit.

In January 2013 I found an ideal building (complete with a lot of needed contents) and by April had acquired it under contract by the non-profit and I leased it for 6 months on a test run. I made the necessary repairs and renovations to have part of the building usable and with the help of a handful of volunteers we had it cleaned and ready to go in a month.

May 1st, 2013 the doors opened on the Veterans Art Center and the need was quick to show itself as classes started, Veterans Art Exhibits hosted, and the craft cupboards in the main studio were converted to a coffee and snack area. In August 2013 we had our first annual meeting in the new gallery and presented a video of the changes that had taken place in a few short months.

We were not set up for tracking those first few months but by August 1st we had 175 registered participants, 17 volunteer instructors, and a mountain of donated art supplies, woodworking equipment and musical instruments.

As the purchase contract closing date of October 2013 loomed in on us and we were still not able to get bank funding to buy it I had to rethink my strategy.

So many veterans and family members had partaken in the free programs and services. So many veteran and family members offered their time and efforts to create the Veterans Art Center and introduce new programs. So many veterans and family members commented to us and to news reporters, on how participation and making art had eased their PTSD symptoms, gotten them out of isolation, given them purpose and more.

One veteran entered my office in early October, his eyes welled up with tears, and he proceeded to describe his activities on the day he first came in, his suicidal plans and intentions, and his walking through our door with no other purpose than to use the bathroom and warm up. He was telling me this because he no longer felt suicidal, he now felt like he had a reason to live, and he spoke of plans and dreams of a new job cooking once he got back on his feet. When he left my office I phoned the bank and said to go with the personal loan.

If this place could save one life it was worth the risk and worth the cost to save even more. My vision of Helping Veterans Heal was being fulfilled. On October 31st, 2013 I wrote a personal check for $79,206.01 as down payment and closing costs on a 5 year loan and purchased the building for the Veterans Art Center. That 5 years is up.

The non-profit has made all payments on the building since March 2014 and the remaining payoff to the bank on the loan is $175,000 - Due by October 30, 2018.

During that 5 years, at least since we started tracking, we have provided free programs and services to around 900 veterans and family members annually. Of the portion of those veterans who were surveyed in the past 3 years 426 reported Increased Health or Well Being, 382 Increased Mental Health Support, 238 Increased Access to Health Care, 236 Increased Job Stability, 182 Increased Housing Stability and 145 Increased Family Well Being. Also recorded were 170 with Decreased Urgent Need, 227 with Decreased Food or Gas Need, and 15 FIFTEEN who commented statements to the effect they are alive because of this place.

During the past 5 years we have added crisis and emergency support, alternative healing including acupuncture, yoga and Tai Chi, an RC Car Club, meditation and mindfulness, and many more arts and craft opportunities.

The Veterans and Family members have gone overboard on this exhibition and its not to be missed! We have a full gallery display in a wide variety of media. Exhibiting artists include: Stevie Duffy (Veteran), Wendy Hoffman (Family), Maxwell Bardell (Veteran), Ernest Delto (Veteran), Bob Tallarico (Veteran), Art Blom (Veteran), Kelly Carter (Veteran), Bruce Lohmiller (Veteran), Jose Quinton (Veteran), Gina Allen (Veteran), Kathy Thomas (Family), Nichole Ulibarri (Family), Bill Dittman (Veteran), Pamela Zal (Family), Richard Naimish (Family), Rick Bott (Veteran), Stephen McCollum (Veteran), The Late Night Quilters Group, and Mother Nature.

People's Choice ballots were collected at the opening reception and huge congratulations to the winning artists in each category.

Due to the Excellent participation in the group exhibit we will be doing another members Exhibit in July. The Theme is "Art of This World".

Our Crystal Cup Challenge Fundraiser of the month is Eagles Aerie 595.

Veterans Art Center and Team RWB volunteers assist with a Trustee's Dinner twice monthly and proceeds go to Operation Revamp and the Veterans Art Center.

Veterans Art Center members are invited to come for the dinner on the 3rd and 4th Thursday monthly - $6 a plate.
